Bash completion passed local branch names to compgen -W, which evaluates command substitutions in its word list. A valid branch name containing $() or backticks could therefore run commands during completion.
Replace all four dynamic branch-completion paths with a shared literal matcher in the generator and regenerate the Bash completion. Match raw and escaped prefixes, preserve special target 1, and escape suggestions for the active unquoted, single-quoted, double-quoted, or ANSI-C quoted context. Prefix parsing never evaluates shell expressions. Force Git branch output to one branch per line, independent of column settings.
Motivation
Addresses bug-scan finding 12 (304f4776-9f7d-46e4-b4eb-85fd60dd00ef) and the subsequent review feedback about accepted suggestions, repeated completion, active quoting, branch columns, and fixture ordering.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
Testing
Completion and init BATS suites: all 132 tests passed with global branch.sort=-refname and column.branch=always. Completion fixtures pin their own ordering.
Added a persistent PTY regression that presses Tab and Enter, captures the exact received arguments, and verifies no marker files were created. All 784 cases passed on macOS Bash 3.2 and Bash 5.3; the Bash 5.3 run also loaded the real bash-completion and Git completion libraries.
Interactive coverage includes every affected command, the standalone gtr wrapper, repeated completion, quotes opened partway through words, ANSI-C quotes, non-ASCII names under LC_ALL=C, apostrophes, history characters, and names that also identify directories.
./scripts/generate-completions.sh --check and git diff --check: passed.
Initial full-suite run: 752 of 759 tests passed. All seven failures reproduced on untouched baseline snapshots: three PR remote-selection tests, three debug-trap tests, and one macOS terminal test. The final quoting changes were validated with the scoped suites and interactive matrix above.
Create disposable repositories with ordinary branches and harmless command-substitution fixtures.
Complete branch prefixes through each affected command path, including escaped prefixes and column-enabled Git configuration.
In real interactive Bash sessions, accept suggestions in each quoting context and compare received arguments byte-for-byte with the branch names. Assert marker files remain absent.
Breaking Changes
None. The implementation supports Bash 3.2+ and uses Git branch options available in Git 2.17.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Bash tab completion now correctly offers branch names containing quotes, backticks, command-substitution characters, and Unicode characters across supported commands.
Completion works with escaped and quoted prefixes, handles ambiguous matches more consistently, and preserves literal branch names when accepting results.
The special target 1 continues to be available through target completion.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The Bash completion generator and generated completion use a shared matcher for branch names and target 1. The matcher handles shell quoting without evaluating prefix expressions. Tests cover special-character branch names, quoting contexts, and interactive acceptance.

Summary
Literal matcher and generator scripts/generate-completions.sh
The generator adds a helper that matches local branch names and target 1 against raw or escaped prefixes. It escapes suggestions for the active quoting context and replaces compgen -W in the target, editor, AI, and copy completion paths.
Generated completion and regression coverage completions/gtr.bash, tests/completion.bats, tests/bash_completion_pty.py
The generated completion uses the helper in the affected paths. BATS and PTY tests check literal matching, quoting contexts, repeated completion, accepted arguments, and branch completion with column settings enabled.
No actionable completion regression remains identified; the PR is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 87ec5
The change reduces shell-execution exposure without adding privileges or a new production entrypoint. No introduced security concern was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns interactive behavior across shell versions and completion configurations.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant exposure is branch metadata present in a local repository reaching an interactive shell during target completion. Any execution through that boundary would inherit the invoking user's authority, potentially reaching that user's files and credentials. The PR removes the prior branch-word-list evaluation path rather than granting additional authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The replacement keeps branch strings out of evaluative word-list matching and escapes suggestions for subsequent shell acceptance. The new eval in the BATS helper is test-only: it processes fixed fixtures in a disposable repository, checks that each suggestion becomes one argument, and asserts that marker files were not created.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The interactive regression harness substitutes an argument-recording command, clears prior capture state for each case, and checks exact NUL-delimited arguments and marker absence after completion acceptance. Prompt waits are bounded, and the finally block terminates and reaps the child shell and closes the PTY on success or assertion failure.
